Hospital School

"I learn, you read, he trusts, we teach, you smile and they heal"

After having breakfast and taking a shower, the "patients" of the hospital become "students" of the school. One can sense the smell of a pencil and a rubber, a paintbrush and paint in every room, classrooms, transplant rooms, after an analysis or during a Haemodialysis session. The school bag goes from one end of the hospital corridor to the other, giving a sense of routine to every child and allowing them to feel at home and connected to the future, the school.

Who are we?

The hospital school (Unidad Pedagógica Hospitalaria (UPH)) is the school for the children from 3 to 16 years old who are hospitalized.

6 full-time teachers from Therapeutic Pedagogy and 1 part-time Religion teacher work at the UPH. They all form part of the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment of Valencia (Conselleria de Educación, Formación y Empleo).

Teaching hours and the school year calendar are those officially established for Nursery, Reception and Primary schools in Valencia.

Our objectives:

  • To activate and provide an education which adapts to their necessities. This is done in coordination with educational institutions which provide education to hospitalized students, and, if necessary, with the teachers who intervene at home. In this way, the continuity of the learning process is guaranteed.
  • To maintain a linkage between the hospitalized students and their schools, basically through information and communication technologies.
  • To establish a good communication between the different professionals who intervene in the kid's care: healthcare personnel, tutor from the school, teachers from the UPH, etc.
  • To make the most of the free time in the hospital by planning both leisure activities and educational activities, in coordination with other professionals or non-profit associations.
  • To facilitate the incorporation of the hospitalized child back into his school when the recovery period has finished.

Where do we teach?:

The teaching is done mainly on the second floor of the hospital, but classes are touched on any floor where there is a hospitalized student (up to 16 years old), in his/her own room or in one of the two classrooms of the school.

We work daily with: Room E and F, Oncology, Haematology, Infant Transplant Unit, Haemodialysis, Child and Youth Mental Health and Eating Disorders Unit.

Classrooms:

The school counts with two classrooms: one between Building E and F, and another one in Paediatric Oncology. Both are shared with Cibercaixa. From 9 am to 4 pm its use is restricted to education. From 5 pm it is used as a play centre controlled by volunteers.

We learn and we have fun

Improving the quality of the time spent in the hospital is a priority for us, and for that reason we organize both leisure and educational activities. We work with textbooks and with other kinds of "projects" for students to be able to go out from the hospital and put in practice stuff that has been taught to them that week. We celebrate every traditional holiday, just like in every other school, and organize visits and performance, such as storytellers, magician, well-known persons, etc.
