Functions of Hospital La Fe Transplant Coordination

FUNCTIONS OF HOSPITAL LA FE TRANSPLANT COORDINATION

The main objective of the Transplant Coordination is to ensure the functioning of Hospital La Fe Transplant Coordination in multiple aspects: patient care, organization, administration, education and labour; trying to change the coordination into an exemplary programme.

PATIENT CARE

The Transplant Coordination collaborate with Critical Medicine Units of Hospital La Fe in the finding of possible donors, and is responsible for the organization, for the extraction of organs once the legal requirements have been done —diagnosis of brain death, familiar and legal permission if necessary, relationship with their family, medical and sanitary approval of the organs, permanent contact with the Spanish National Transplant Organization, etc.― and of the implants.

The Coordination is also in charge of looking for and informing the recipient and the different transplant support services: Blood Bank, Pharmacy, Microbiology, Radiodiagnosis, Emergency, Admission, Hospitalization, Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation Unit as well as the Ambulance Service and the different means of overland and air transport.

The family interview is fundamental. When there is a donor in the hospital, the team on duty must do the interview with the family to know the deceased's opinion on organs donation and try to support them emotionally.

Furthermore, the Transplant Coordination organizes the process once the Spanish National Transplant Organization notifies the disposal of an organ in another hospital. They must notify their rejection or their approval and then start the transplant process.

In 2009 kidney and liver transplant teams started this activity only in the cases in which the kidney and liver donor was a friend or family member. The Coordination does the logistical organization in court and collaborates with the study of the donor ―medical reports, Health Care Ethics Committee, etc.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The Transplant Coordination collaborates in the creation of their own Clinical Protocols and in those that need their collaboration. They also collaborate in the training of the Hospital staff by giving talks, seminars, conferences, etc. They notify the Intensive Care Units of changes in Regulations and Protocols related to transplants.

Furthermore, the Hospital La Fe Transplant Coordination is a unit opened to the education of Coordination professionals, both national and foreign. The latter ones normally ask for internships through the Centre's Education Unit or through the National Transplant Organization, with which the Hospital collaborates since the beginning in the "Master Alianza" Programme, intended to train Latin American transplant coordinators.

They also collaborate with outreach programmes of Organ Donation and Transplant in its Patient Care area, together with the Management of the Transplant Programme of the Community of Valencia. Also with particular bodies (such as Patient Associations, Community Associations, Companies, Education Centres, etc.) when they ask for information about donations or transplants.

RESEARCH

Research functions of the Coordination team focus on sending communications to congresses, make presentations, publish scientific articles on transplants and participate in multi-centre research works, in which the Spanish National Transplant Organization, Conselleria and professionals societies have asked our collaboration.
